Chargers inside linebacker Stephen Cooper has been suspended by the NFL for the first 4 games of the 2008 season for testing positive for a banned substance. Several sources have reported that Cooper had tested positive for ephedra in December. Ephedra has been banned in the NFL since 2001.
In response to the suspension, Cooper released the following statement: “I regret that I mistakenly took a stimulant that I did not realize at the time was banned by the NFL. I support the NFL's anti-doping policies and understand that I must serve a suspension even though the stimulant that I took was not used before any game and was not used to enhance my performance. I apologize to the NFL, my team, my coaches, and to my fans, and I look forward to continuing to help the Chargers toward our goal of winning the Super Bowl in the upcoming season.” Sources claim that Cooper had used some form of a recreational drug, which is open to speculation as to what drug, that he feels may have contained the stimulant in which he was unaware of. The ironic part is that if Cooper had simply tested positive for a recreational drug, such as marijuana, he would not have been suspended. But due to the fact he tested positive for a stimulant listed on the banned substances list, he was suspended for 4 games. Regardless of how the ephedra got into Cooper's system, he is stupid for allowing this to happen, knowingly or not. When you are a professional athlete and your career is dependent on your body and knowing what you put into your body, you would think you would be a lot more careful about what you are putting into your system. If it is true as many sources have reported, that Cooper was smoking marijuana; why would you trust putting a substance into your body that is known to contain at times nearly 400 chemicals itself and can easily be laced with more as it seems his was according to his claims. Cooper, you are a moron.

Luckily for the Chargers, we don't play the Patriots in the first 4 games of the season. Cooper is a strong linebacker and we need him!
